Global Recession? / Glasgow East / Obama [Friday
July 25th, 2008 at 3:00am]
[ mood | aghast ]

Denmark is in recession.
Ireland and France are almost ready to declare a technical recession.
Spain and Italy and on the edge of a possible recession.
American property has fallen as low as their 1990/1 recession prices.

What hope does the UK have?! The GDP figures are relased today and should show we've somehow managed to stave it off by the skin of our teeth. Here's hoping!

Mind you, China and Russia both claim they're experiencing economic growth! Strange since Western Europe and the US are facing economic decline. Who's going to be buying their products/services?

Now, the Glasgow East by-election...no real shock I think you'd agree despite the 22% swing as in the end it was down to around 1,000 votes (with a rather poor 42% turnout!?). However, is this a sign of true support for the SNP or simply the result of the proletariat registering their unhappiness with the current economic state of the UK by punishing Labour? With Westminster losing three Labour seats within as many months one might be inclined to bet against them in the next election.

Obama gave a speech in Berlin yesterday which, as per usual, he delivered to a high standard. A very early play on the fact he's black in his speech was rather clumsy and cheap in my opinion. Follow this with obvious historical links to the war, the Marshall plan, the Berlin Wall and you have the 'man on the Clapham omnibus' eating out of your hand. Finish them off with some chat on terrorism, a play on the citizen of the world facing "walls" and a mention of Mugabe/human rights and you're done. Everyone think you're great, you've said what they wanted to hear, folk cheer and tah-dah ... instant foreign policy experience US style!

All rather cheap, no? Hmm...let's see how he gets on in the UK today.
